Binocular vision develops in childhood

Binocular vision is not innate. Only the foundation is present at birth. Binocular vision is created and fully developed during the first years of life.

We have two eyes controlled by the brain. To have good binocular vision, the two eyes must work together as a well-coordinated team.

When we read, it happens primarily with vision.

If incorrect information comes via vision to the brain, potential cannot be fully utilized.

Since we spend much of our day in front of screens, it places great demands on binocular vision.

Understanding binocular vision

Binocular vision consists of several parts

The eyes are used for many different tasks during the day.

Eye movements

Ensure that what we look at hits a small area on the retina and compensate for head/body movements.

Accommodation - focusing

Quickly create a clear image when switching focus.

Vergence - fixation

Fine-tuning so that vision remains single and clear.

Depth vision – 3D vision

Merging two images into one with depth perception.

Binocular vision is important for learning

Many children have undetected binocular vision problems.

Reduced visual function can have major consequences.

Parents should be aware of signs of binocular vision problems.
